Competition Submission 2019
In order to activate the under-utilised West End of Vondelpark, a trio of architectural forms are proposed for the Spring Pavilion Amsterdam competition. Utilising a modular timber frame construction influenced by the iconic Amsterdam townhouse silhouette, these architectural follys enable users to engage the park in new ways, providing a conduit through which the landscape can be experienced. The small scale interventions sit delicately within the park and act as supporting devices allowing users means to further enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Fietscafe (Cycle Cafe)
Amsterdam’s cyclists utilise Vondelpark as both a route to traverse and an arena for recreation. The Cycle Cafe looks to support this activity and culture. The pavilion provides a cycle workshop whilst also offering a cafe where people can socialise. At night the workshop serves as a teaching facility where bike maintenance skills can be developed.
Speel Paviljeon (Play Pavilion)
The Play Pavilion proposes a multi-use ‘stage’ which can function as a sports, music and arts venue from day to night. The lightweight construction and canvas screens frame the activities and provide a focal point to activate the immediate surroundings. When not in use the pavilion acts as a shelter and a social space for the public.
Botenhuis (Boat House)
The Boat House provides a base from which to explore the park from a fresh perspective. Serving as a boathouse as well as providing changing facilities for wild swimming during the day, at night the pavilion operated as a music venue and bar. The multiple uses provide users with a unique way to engage with the landscape.
